60th Anniversary Celebrations of Ladies’ College Buddhist Society
25
Jun
On the 25th of June 2024, Ladies’ College celebrated the 60th anniversary of its Buddhist Society with a series of heartfelt and memorable events. The celebration commenced with the annual Bhakthi Gee program, a cherished tradition where Buddhist students from grade 7 and upwards sang Bhakthi Gee. This year, for the first time, the school’s dance troupe also performed, adding a vibrant and dynamic
element to the occasion.
Following the Bhakthi Gee program, a special felicitation ceremony took place. This ceremony was dedicated to acknowledging and honoring the numerous individuals who have played crucial roles in the continuity and success of the Buddhist Society over the years. Firstly, the society felicitated Mrs. Deepika Dassanaike and Mrs. Ranmalee Balasooriya our present principal and vice principal. Among the distinguished guests were past principals, including Mrs. Nirmali Wickramasinghe and Mrs. Eesha Speldewinde, and also past Vice principals, whose leadership and support were pivotal during their respective tenures.
We were also honored by the presence of Ms. Mangalika Abeykoon, the founding Secretary of the Buddhist Society. Many past teachers in charge, mangers of the school (present/past), dedicated staff members, and esteemed old girls attended the event, reflecting the deep bonds
and enduring commitment of the Ladies’ College community. Each of these individuals was felicitated and presented with special tokens of appreciation as a gesture of our profound gratitude for their invaluable contributions. In celebration we also donated some Buddhist books to the school library. We also didn’t forget those who passed away, yet made a special contribution to our society.
A highlight of the event was the unveiling of the brand-new society logo. This logo, designed by two talented LCites, Himaya Vidanagamage of grade 12 and Lara Gunawardena of grade 13, symbolizes the society’s rich heritage and forward-looking spirit. The new logo represents a fresh
chapter in the continuing legacy of the Buddhist Society.
The Ladies’ College Buddhist Society, established in 1964 by Ms. Sylvia Gunatillake, has thrived over the past six decades, fostering a strong sense of community and spiritual growth among its members. The 60th anniversary celebration was not just a reflection on the past, but a celebration
of the society’s enduring values and the vibrant community that supports it. We are extremely proud of our school and society, and the anniversary celebration was a testament to the dedication and hard work of countless individuals over the years. It was a day filled with joy, gratitude, and inspiration, marking a significant milestone in the history of Ladies’ College
