School Motto

The Christian Foundation of the college is expressed in our motto "This Is The Victory Even Our Faith"

This motto was selected by our founder Lilian Nixon and is significant as it is derived from the Bible John 5:4 "This is the victory that conquers the world, our faith".  This says it all for the missionaries coming to this far-flung colony and succeeding generations of principals, for it was their faith which overcame all difficulties they faced to maintain the ethos of this school despite the many changes during the last century. This is a motto that applies to each and every one of us in our daily life.

Ms Nixon's aim was "the building of the church by lifting the intellectual level of its women, some of who would become leaders with trained and balanced judgment.

Gwen Opie of New Zealand, a young woman who left home and family to travel to Colombo on a troopship in 1915 was appointed Principal of Ladies' College in 1917 and guided the school for the next 27 years dying in harness in 1944 Qoute from a school girl in the Opie era

Those of us whose formative years were spent under Miss Opie felt the strength of the Christian convictions that directed her life

This is a Christian School based on Christian values, yet encompasses girls of all religions. I think the school motto - Haec Victoria Nostra Fides did not make much sense to me when I was young, but as I grew up I was able to relate to it. We are called upon to have faith in what we do.

Our chapel is called the Hope of The World - we must have hope for the future. Our founders who came across the seas to establish this school was sustained by faith and hope and Ladies' College symbolizes the victory of that faith."

School Crest

The Ladies' College Crest is made up of The Shield Of Faith & The Imperishable Wreath of Victory in Self Discipline

The first school crest was designed by Lilian Nixon which consisted of the motto engraved on St Patrick's Sheild of faith, for it was alway her faith that drove Miss Nixon to achieve what she did at Ladies' College.

The original crest appreared in the Ladies' College Leaflets published by the Old Girls since 1910.

Later in 1923 the new crest was adopted enlarging and rounding the original shield to enclose the wreath and perhaps the centre appearing like a lamp representing Christian Education (the light of Christ) john 8:12, Ps 119:105.

In the new crest the motto was translated into Latin

Haec Victoria Nostra Fides
