All sections of the school are alive with activities designed to stimulate and inspire. The children enjoy learning in this environment. The country needs creative thinkers and the damage done in the name of education that is confined to a set of marks will result in students leaving the school with tunnel vision.
The present national curriculum that we as national schools are compelled to follow at all levels is heavy and stressful. In pursuit of a set of marks gleaned from oppressive syllabi, children are in a ‘learn what you are taught and then reproduce’ mode of study. In a world where access to learning is limitless, we are stunting and thwarting our children into answering only the knowledge printed in mediocre textbooks in order to adhere to rigid answer schemes. Teachers and tutors are also boxed in these confines and children oscillate between them in pursuit of examination success.
We believe that basic knowledge contained in a syllabus should be a spring board for creative expression and freedom of mind, and not for the mind to be held captive within its confines as it is today. The limitless learning areas of the worldwide web, library resources, newspapers, radio, TV and opportunities for travel should be pursued relentlessly.
Knowledge must take wings to allow research and application. The ability to think and make decisions must develop so that thought and actions are directed to make value judgments.
